thunder only happens when it's raining
random thoughts on recent events:
* with the recent spate of well-publicized deaths, i'm really having a hard time lumping john ritter in with althea gibson and george plimpton. i mean, r.i.p. and all, but c'mon...
* speaking of death, i've a wake to attend this afternoon. for the husband in a once childless couple who found happiness and twins through reproductive therapy. the widow is my godson's godmother. he died of a heart-attack in his sleep. tragic.
* god i love this weather and i love not turning on the heat and burrowing deep in the down covers.
* which reminds me, i'm alone in those down covers. ~sigh~
* i love the way no one is saying the "cia operative's name" but there's no problem in telling who her husband is. no one will ever figure that out...
* i came up with a good analogy for the bush administration this morning on the exercycle -- a snowball picking up speed and mass as it rolls downhill -- lies building upon lies....big, dangerous, unwieldy....destined to self destruct. let's hope i'm right.
* it's unfair, i guess, to place a higher value on someone's life versus somebody else's (see first random thought). i guess my snide remark should be re-directed at the media and hype and a culture that places so much value on celebrity. right?
* junior senior is great morning workout music
(i was beginning to wonder if i'd lost my vapidity....shew, close call)

sunshine, blue skies
nip, nip, nippy! it is a LOVELY day here in the ATL. fall has arrived with gorgeous, cobalt skies and dry, cool air. i'll be breaking out the down comforters tonight, that's for sure. it's days like this that make me realize Life Is Good. my dog is happy. my house is clean. my head is clear. what's not to like, right?

it was another long, wonderful weekend. dinner with jill and su friday was an unexpected treat. patio in inman park has reopened....the third time's a charm, apparently. great food, great atmosphere and very cute waiter named jason. uh huh. saturday was good too....finished hours of yard work and even got some sun on my bright, white body. yesterday was the crown jewel, though. fall was officially launched with a gathering on the porch. happiness reigned supreme and the kids all had a good time.

on happy side note: my ex realizes his long-standing dream this week with the opening of Kosmos, a new restaurant in College Park. it is difficult for me to describe how much and what this means. that man has come a long way since i met him. one thing has not changed and that is the beautiful person that he is. i love you kevin, good luck!

on tap for the week: more killer workouts, some time with tamee, home improvement projects and, most importantly, some QT for JB.

have a great week, y'all.

i played death games inside
i could go on about how it's friday and i went to halo last night and all the gays were there and then some and i could tell you about passing out then waking up at 7 fully clothed or i could tell you about how my assistant's first comment was "ew, alcohol!" or i could tell you about the box of smints that i got at the dentist yesterday and how it's almost empty cause i've been eating them like, well, candy, or i could mention how i'm squinting at the monitor because everything's just so blurry. but i won't cause it's not polite to talk about the cancer.

hello, betty? yes, reservation for one. hacienda suite, please. that's brown, b-r-o-w-n. yes, on my account, please. thanks.

lodestar
nights like the last are nights in which worlds collide, ideas fly, sparks consume and i'm left to stand in awe. of many things, really. the list (and don't i love lists) runs the gammut: love, envy, respect, admiration, surprise, disgust, empathy and pride. joy is there, certainly. it's as if i'm 17 again, standing on the quarry's edge in the dry dirt, peering over at the cobalt cold waters. one, two, three, they all jump ahead of me, landing with loud splashes and conquering laughter. and i stand, frozen for but a moment, my stomach in my throat and my heart pounding a quickening bass beat. then i jump. and for a brief second there is total freedom, total control, pure results of a decision. me, soaring through the air to the cold, hard, deep surface below.

catch a wave
greetings from lovely monterey, california. out here for a schmooze-fest, we decided to take surfing lessons this morning. kristina is big time surfer, having surfed twice in costa rica with manuel. honestly....anyway, i seem to have taken to this surfing stuff pretty naturally. as noah greenberg, our jewish surfer dude instructor (yes, imagine it) says, "dude, it's all about getting wet." well, he didn't say "dude," but you get the point. all kidding aside, surfing totally rocks and i'll be out there tomorrow morning with dolphins and the seals and fish and the rest the dudes and dudettes, baggin' tasty waves, y'all. trust.

pretty girls make graves
excuse the repetitive smiths references, but i've got birthday greetings to make.

1) i'm all about hurricanes, too. in 1989, i rode out hurricane hugo on my ship in charleston harbor, lashed to the shipyard pier. we were unable to go to sea, so they strapped us in and said good luck. besides watching a submarine submerge in the cooper river, i saw birds fly backwards, rain fall horizontally, houseboats go hydroplaning by and the seasons change in one night. then the eye passed over. calm, humid, hot. eerily quiet. and lots of birds for some strange reason. it lasted 45 minutes, long enough for the boatswain's mates to change the mooring lines around. the winds shifted 180 degrees and then i saw billboards, more boats, trees, leaves, signs, shingles, yard sheds and grass go flying back the other way. i also saw the ship's windmeter pegged at 125mph. we banged against the pier the rest of the night but sustained no damage. we got up the next morning to leafless trees, downed powerlines and billboards, sailboats miles away from water and hordes of people wandering the streets, directionless, observing the damage in a daze. all this is to say that hurricanes are beautiful, magnificent, awesome, frightening, amazing creations. think we have the upper hand over nature? think again. my advice to those unafraid of isabel, "don't fuck with a fucker." right jennie?

2) strange happenings in midtown last night. as i was walking gus and annabelle, a little jack russell joined us. i tried to catch him but he kept 20 feet or so ahead of us. i'd try to restrain the labs but the jack stayed ahead of me. i wanted to make sure he wasn't lost and was beginning to fear he'd get hit when an atlanta police officer drove up. he asked if the dog was mine and i told him the situation. he sped up ahead of the jack and got out and managed to pick up the dog. once i caught up, i realized it was officer Hottie McHotterton. *start 70's porn track now* he offered to take the dog back around to where it joined us. and i offered to take it in if McHotterton couldn't find the owners. he agreed. then, he chatted me up for a few minutes and wrote down my address. i raced home, checked my hair, fluffed a little and waited. and waited. and waited. alas, he never showed and the fate of the jack is unknown. however, i did have a glorious night of sleep, filled with the most vivid law enforcement dreams ever. trust y'all.

you are repressed but you're remarkably dressed
love hair day. LOVE it! a solid hour and a half of unfocused bliss. no emails, no calls, no loud assistant yelling at me from down the hall. no grass to cut, no dog to tend to, no crumbling basement foundation to worry about. just scalp massages, gossip and new products. that's what it's all about folks. and of course, somebody's totally undivided attetion, focused on ME. and i get a whole new perspective on how i look. it's worth whatever the cost, lemme tell ya.

god is my hair short...

jesus is on the main line
god, i never thought monday would get here. what a long weekend, time stretched out forever over 2.5 days. i mean, i ain't complaining.

here's a quick recap: friday featured self-love, a glorious nap, kind bud and gumbo chez steve. i have never laughed so much. saturday's highlights include glamour groups at the BGG, a trip up on the roof to finish some painting, yard work, shopping including New Music, another great nap, football and beer, doggie walks and quality time at New Melrose Place. i awoke sunday fully clothed. all the lights were on. can you say "passed out?" ufff. so i made do and cleaned the house, took a very important call, did what jair does best, tripped over to bret's for the Great Blackout/Cookout '03, then was home and in bed by 10. yay!

gifts were given freely last night...props to B and JT for the pix and music, respectively. and mad props to buschie for holding it together in the face of adversity (i mean, no electricity or running water? that's tough....).

on deck for the week: workin', workin' out and jettin' to cali to console j-lo. be good y'all.

those are people who died
i'm not sure if i should feel bad about the title of yesterday's post or not. i'll vote no, since johnny cash was such a freakin' amazing artist. an absolute american classic. he will be missed. john ritter....doesn't upset me. sorry, but i couldn't get past his Jack character in Three's Company. Shari Lewis? so very sad. goodbye childhood. they come in three's don't they? one thing's for sure, heaven just got better, y'all.

a few tasty treats out there in blog land today: sean's telling it like it is. jair got me all worked UP yesterday, had to remain seated if you know what i mean. and we got a new 'lantra blogger, hey chris!

then there's this gem, courtesy of jeannine's friend, ida-claire (aka ms. johnny johnson). here we have Ida-Claire and Jeannine enjoying another boring visit to provincetown. on a side note, y'all, if you ever get the chance to meet ms. J, do it. you'll never regret a moment. it's friendship capital well-spent.

got to touch base with mr. hands and ms. b last night. they're all good, livin' over at the New Big Gay Fraternity House (hereby known as Melrose Place...just like the mythical tv location, only in lofts). ms. b is turnin' out some fierce interiors, y'all. trust. and mr. hands' heart just keeps growin'. thanks matteo for the amazing gift.

finally, in a new development, i'm a bit hungover this morning. yes, it's true. the culprit: another thursday night at halo. all the gays were there....and then some. and get this, there was a fight, with fists and everything!

on the agenda: a great fallish weekend, some home improvement, QT with my peeps, a trip to the CD store and fun with the doggies. y'all keep it real, now, ya hear.

ring of fire
so much to write about today yet i haven't the introspection to adequately do it. i am not at all optimistic about the state of our nation. no, the way i see it, geo. bush and company have so undermined what this country stands for that the bottom is bound to drop out, like a rotten basket carrying bricks. that about wraps it up for me. not pretty, huh?

in other, "today, i had ____ for lunch" news, i had an awesome leg workout last night and my ass is gonna be s-o-r-e, and not the way i'd like it to be. i'll take it though (yeah, i take it like a champ...always). the dogs kept me up, but not as bad as tuesday night. scared the shit out of my friend and new neighbor jeremy, banging on his back door instead of the front. heee-eey, welcome to midtown!

i love the night life
ugh. if there was one bitchy person this morning, there were a hundred. and you know who you are. i'm just too lazy to link ya'. count me in that multitude. why you ask? well, the reverend and mrs. were in town last night and had to get up at, oh, 4 this morning. mother is quiet as a mouse, but my father, i swear, is the loudest human being on earth. and he always leaves the shower head on that really fine setting that stings like a pressure washer. then there's their dog, sweet thing that she is, jumping awake at each and every noise. even gus was perturbed. then there was the fact that i didn't get back to sleep. then didn't go to the gym. then the coffee sucked. then i was really late. then my assistant had poured sour milk in her kashi and boy was she in a fine mood. then i've got a new laptop and can't get the screen right and it's killing my eyes and that damn AIM door sound won't go away.....and then, and then, and then. well, i could go on, but i'm sure you get the picture. i was better rested in p-town....hard to believe.

speaking of....walt's got some good vacation pix linked from his site. go check 'em out.

new music: hed kandi, beach house 04 03. disc one especially rocks.

some girls' mothers
man, word sure travels fast. within two hours of that last post, i had received an IM and a call on the cellie asking me if i was quitting my job. um, no. not yet anyway. i ain't jumpin' ship unless i got a liferaft to land in people. i mean, i ain't bright but i'm not dumb. i just gotta build the raft, is all.

in other news, i'll not bore you with my post vacation depression syndrome. suffice it to say, it was a great trip and i'd so much rather be on the cape. two things lacking though: 1. qt for jb (that's quality time for myself) and 2. throw-down sex. but whatever, i'll get both here, thankyouverymuch.

anyway, change is in the air, darlings. and like my friend mommie says to panhandlers, "change comes from within." so right she is.

i do not want what i have not got
well, not exactly. but it is time for a change. i could continue down the road i'm on, comfortable in a nice job in a nice house with nice debts doing nice things. but i'm not really in control of this niceness, rather, i've lent it off in exchange for comfort. i'm 38 and haven't had a decent professional challenge in 12 years. hell, even when i got laid off, i found this job that very same night. i was unemployed long enough to have a cocktail. so labor day on the cape has come and gone, a deadline or commencement that i set for myself. today begins the change. i'm going to take back the control, thank you. it may take a while and it may be painful, but it will be mine. i want to enjoy the light and the way it falls on the paintings and, literally, take part in the way my world is shaped. i want more than one week up there and i want more than a steady paycheck. my family and my friends are rock-solid and i'm in pretty good shape myself. i've got 16 years of excellent varied experiences and i'm not afraid of hard work and i'm not too scared of failing. so somebody throw me the lifering if i start to go under. i'll take it, rest a bit, and swim to shore.

* 'twon gets props for spotting him in the crowd. yes, your name was mentioned.
* i now have a secret target of my affection to pursue here in the ATL. daddy!
* our "cook out and turn out" drag bbq was a huge success. jeannine and tamee never looked so good.

* 'twon captured the miss ptown 2003 title. the boy was BUSY. trust.
